  41. * 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS                                                  *
  42. ****************************************************************************

  44. NOTE:  This driver has been designed for and tested with Microsoft
  45.        Windows* 95 only; the driver is not intended to be used on 
  46.        Windows* 98.  The SETUP.EXE program, however, can additionally
  47.        be run on Windows* 98 to remove the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver, which
  48.        remains installed after upgrading a Windows* 95 system to Windows*
  49.        98 using the Microsoft Windows* 98 Upgrade CD-ROM.
  50.  
  51. 1.  The system chipset must contain an Intel(r) PIIXn device
  52.     (82371FB - PIIX, 82371SB - PIIX3, 82371AB/EB - PIIX4/PIIX4E).
  53.     The following is a list of Intel(r) chipsets as of August, 1998,
  54.     listing corresponding PIIXn devices:

  106. * 3.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                              *

  109. 1.  Check the System Requirements and ensure the system is operating
  110.     correctly.
  111.  
  112. 2.  Close any running applications.
  113.  
  114. 3.  The driver files are stored in an integrated application setup program.  
  115.     This program is a Windows* 95 program that allows the driver files to be 
  116.     INSTALLED or DE-INSTALLED.
  117.     
  118.     Execute the driver setup program - run SETUP.EXE.
  119.  
  120. 4.  Select 'Next' on Welcome Screen to continue.
  121.  
  122. 5.  View the 'Software Use and Distribution License Agreement' and choose 
  123.     'Yes' if you agree to continue.
  124.  
  125.     NOTE:  If you choose 'No' the program will terminate.
  126.  
  127. 6.  Next, select 'INSTALL' to install the Intel(r) BM-IDE Driver.
  128.  
  129.     NOTE:  if the driver is currently installed on the system, SETUP will
  130.     ask you whether or not you want to continue.  Follow the prompts on the
  131.     screen to Install the driver if desired.
  132.  
  133. 7.  Select 'OK' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  134.  
  135. 8.  Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to complete the 
  136.     setup when Windows* 95 is re-started.
  137.  
  138.     Upon re-start, Windows* 95 will display that it has found Intel PCI 
  139.     Bus Master IDE controller hardware and is installing hardware for it.
  140.  
  141. 9  Select 'Yes' when prompted to re-start Windows* 95.
  142.

  152. * 4.  VERIFYING INSTALLATION OF THE DRIVER                                 *
  153. ****************************************************************************
  154.  
  155. If the system does not operate reliably or fails to boot when the driver is
  156. installed, jump to the "TROUBLESHOOTING" section below.
  157.  
  158. To verify successful installation:
  159.  
  160. 1.  Run START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL
  161.  
  162. 2.  Invoke the SYSTEM applet.
  163.  
  164. 3.  Select the DEVICE MANAGER tab.
  165.  
  166. 4.  Select the VIEW DEVICES BY TYPE option.  A list of the devices 
  167.     connected to the system will be displayed.
  168.  
  169. 5.  Select the HARD DISK CONTROLLERS entry.
  170.  
  171. 6.  Verify the 'Intel 82371xx PCI Bus Master IDE Controller' listing.
  172.  
  173.         NOTE:  A yellow '!' mark is normal if no devices are connected 
  174.                to that controller.
  175.     
  176.     If a yellow warning symbol appears in error, the driver may not be 
  177.     installed and/or working properly.  Please refer to the 
  178.     "TROUBLESHOOTING" section below.
  179.  
  180.  
  181. ****************************************************************************
  182. * 5.  DE-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                           *
  183. ****************************************************************************
  184.  
  185. NOTE:  The de-installer function of this software package can be used to
  186.        remove the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver from both Windows* 95 and 
  187.        Windows* 98 operating systems.  Due to a limitation in the Microsoft
  188.        Windows* 98 Upgrade installer, the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver is not 
  189.        replaced by the Microsoft BM-IDE driver during the upgrade procedure.
  190.        This scenario may cause problems in the system's IDE subsytem.  The
  191.        recommended procedure is to replace the Intel driver with the native
  192.        Microsoft BM-IDE driver by running the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver
  193.        SETUP.EXE program under Windows* 98. 
  194.  
  195. 1.  Either Windows* 95 or Windows* 98 must be installed.
  196.  
  197. 2.  Close any running applications.
  198.  
  199. 3.  The driver de-installer is stored in an integrated application setup 
  200.     program.  This program is a Windows* 95 program that allows the driver 
  201.     files to be INSTALLED or DE-INSTALLED.
  202.     
  203.     Execute the driver setup program - run SETUP.EXE.
  204.  
  205. 4.  Click 'Next' on Welcome Screen to continue.
  206.  
  207. 5.  View the 'Software Use and Distribution License Agreement' and choose 
  208.     'Yes' if you agree to continue.
  209.  
  210.     NOTE:  If you choose 'No' the program will terminate.
  211.  
  212. 6.  If running under Windows* 98, a dialog box will appear, stating that
  213.     the installation software will only provide a driver DE-INSTALL function
  214.     under Windows* 98.  Select OK to continue.
  215.  
  216. 7.  Select 'DE-INSTALL', to install the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver when prompted
  217.     to do so.
  218.  
  219.     NOTE:  If the driver is not currently installed on the system, SETUP will
  220.            exit.
  221.  
  222. 8.  If running under Windows* 98, a dialog box will appear next, indicating 
  223.     that after the system reboots, only NEXT should be chosen for all 
  224.     Windows* 98 system prompts that appear.  These prompts are native to
  225.     Windows* 98, and cannot be suppressed by the BM-IDE de-installer program.
  226.     Be sure not to change any of the dialog box settings, and simply select 
  227.     NEXT as many times as necessary in order for the system to reboot and
  228.     reconfigure properly.
  229.  
  230. 9.  Click 'OK' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  231.  
  232. 10. Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to complete the 
  233.     setup when Windows* is re-started.
  234.  
  235.     NOTE:  After Windows* 95 configures the primary IDE controller, you 
  236.            will be prompted to reboot.  At this prompt, select 'No.'  
  237.            Windows* 95 will configure the secondary IDE controller next,
  238.            and you will be prompted again to reboot the system.  At this
  239.            prompt, select 'Yes' to reboot.
  240.  
  241.            If you selected 'Yes' to the first of the two prompts, a blue
  242.            screen may show upon rebooting, and a message may appear stating
  243.            that the system is now running in MS-DOS compatibility mode.
  244.            To remedy this situation, see 'A1.#4' in the TROUBLESHOOTING
  245.            section below.
  246.  
  247. 11. If desired, enable the native Microsoft driver's bus mastering
  248.     capability, which is not enabled by default.
  249.  
  250.     NOTE:  Unlike the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver, the Microsoft BM-IDE driver
  251.            relies on the system BIOS to correctly identify each IDE
  252.            device's maximum transfer mode and configure the device 
  253.            appropriately.  As a result, be sure to have the latest 
  254.            system BIOS upgrade installed on your system at all times.
  255.            Contact your system manufacter to obtain the lastest BIOS
  256.            upgrade for your system.
  257.  
  258.            a) Run START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL
  259.            b) Run SYSTEM applet.
  260.            c) Select DEVICE MANAGER tab.
  261.            d) Select VIEW DEVICES BY TYPE option.
  262.            e) For each IDE device type (e.g., Disk Drives, CD-ROM) perform
  263.               the following:
  264.               - select IDE device entry (e.g., "GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE01")
  265.               - select PROPERTIES option
  266.               - select SETTINGS tab
  267.               - select DMA checkbox (if exists)
  268.               
  269.               NOTE:  Windows* 98 will display a dialog box entitled
  270.                      'Unsupported Hardware' when the DMA checkbox is
  271.                      selected.  Ignore this message and continue. 
  272.  
  273.          f) Reboot the system when prompted to do so.
  274.              g) Reference the following Microsoft website for more info:

  279. * 6.  IDENTIFYING THE SOFTWARE VERSION NUMBER                              *
  280. ****************************************************************************
  281.  
  282. The driver version can be determined by using Windows* Explorer to read
  283. the driver file's properties.
  284.  
  285. NOTE: After installation, the following driver and related files are stored
  286.       in the following locations:
  287.

  289.       <Windows* 95 directory>\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\PIIXVSD.VXD

  291.  
  292. 1.  Under Windows* 95, invoke the "Windows Explorer" application.
  293.  
  294. 2.  Select the path containing the driver file.

  300. 3.  Select the driver file - IDEATAPI.MPD.

  302. 4.  Open the "File" menu.

  304. 5.  Select the "Properties" item.

  306. 6.  Select the "Version" tab.
  307.  
  308. 7.  The IDEATAPI.MPD version is listed in the 'Product Version' portion
  309.     of the dialog.

  313. * 7.  DEVICE CONFIGURATION INFORMATION                                     *
  314. ****************************************************************************
  315.  
  316. During initialization, the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver will auto-identify 
  317. all devices connected to the IDE interface.  Depending on the 
  318. capabilities of the devices connected to the system, the driver will 
  319. initialize the PIIXn IDE interface for Bus Mastering operation.
  320.  
  321. Only drives identified as bus master capable will be accessed via
  322. Direct Memory Access (DMA modes); all other drives will be accessed
  323. in a PIO-only fashion.  In general, bus mastering is possible for ATA/ATAPI
  324. devices (with the exception of tape devices) which support the following DMA
  325. timing modes:
  326.  
  327.     Single Word DMA Mode 2
  328.     Multi-Word DMA Modes 1 or 2
  329.     Ultra DMA Modes 0, 1 or 2
  330.  
  331. These devices will be accessed by the driver via either DMA or PIO accesses,
  332. depending on the specific transfer conditions.
  333.  
  334. Devices that do not support the DMA timing modes listed above, or whose PIO 
  335. timings are faster than their DMA timings, will be accessed in a PIO-fashion 
  336. ONLY.  As mentioned above, all tape devices are accessed in PIO-fashion as
  337. well.
  338.  
  339.  
  340. ****************************************************************************
  341. * 8.  TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION                                          *
  342. ****************************************************************************
  343.  
  344. In general, if the system fails to operate reliably, the recommendation is
  345. to de-install the driver, and use the native Microsoft IDE driver instead.
  346. See the "DE-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" section above for de-install
  347. information.
  348.  
  349. Q1>  There is a yellow mark (!) or question mark (?) next to the primary or 
  350.      secondary IDE controller entry under Device Manager.
  351.  
  352.      -OR-
  353.  
  354.      The secondary IDE controller instance is missing under Device
  355.      Manager, yet at least one device is connected to this cable.
  356.  
  357.      -OR-
  358.  
  359.      After rebooting following the de-istall procedure, a blue-screen
  360.      shows indicating that the system has been put into compatibility mode.
  361.  
  362. A1>  There are several possible causes for this issue: 
  363.  
  364.        1.  Your CD-ROM drive may need be configured as a slave drive.  
  365.            Please refer to your CD-ROM documentation for assistance.
  366.           
  367.        2.  There is a hardware conflict in the system. Only TWO IDE 
  368.            channels are allowed in a system. The driver will not operate on 
  369.            systems that have a non-Intel IDE controller or a sound card with 
  370.            an IDE interface.  The driver should not be de-installed on these 
  371.            systems.
  372.  
  373.        3.  The system BIOS may not have initialized the 82371xB IDE
  374.            controller properly.  Please contact your system manufacturer
  375.            to upgrade to the latest BIOS for your system.
  376.  
  377.        4.  The system registry may have to be modified:
  378.             
  379.            NOTE:  This procedure should only be performed by experienced
  380.                   users.
  381.  
  382.              a) Run START/RUN, type 'REGEDIT' and select OK
  383.              b) Off of the My Computer icon, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  384.              c) Select 'System'
  385.              d) Select 'CurrentControlSet'
  386.              e) Select 'Services'
  387.              f) Select 'VxD'
  388.              g) Select 'IOS'
  389.              h) On the right-hand-side of the screen, there may be an
  390.                 entry with the name 'NoIDE' - select this entry, and
  391.                 select EDIT/DELETE to remove this entry.
  392.              i) Restart the system
  393.  
  394. Q2>  One or more of the IDE/ATAPI drives on the system fail to perform 
  395.      correctly and/or is not recognized by the driver.
  396.  
  397. A2>  Ensure devices on the system are connected according to the 
  398.      manufacturers' documentation.  Please make sure that you don't have any 
  399.      non-supported IDE devices or applications installed on the system.  
  400.      Please refer to the release note for supported devices and applications.
  401.  
  402. Q3>  The CD-ROM drive fails to perform correctly after the driver has been
  403.      installed.
  404.  
  405. A3>  A conflict between the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver and a DOS real-mode 
  406.      ATAPI CD-ROM device driver may have occurred. This conflict occurs when 
  407.      both the real-mode driver and the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver attempt to 
  408.      access the resources of the PIIXn IDE controller.  If the drive fails
  409.      to operate in the case that there is NO real-mode driver for the
  410.      device is installed, de-install the driver.
  411.  
  412. Q4>  How can I play MS-DOS based CD-ROM games?  
  413.  
  414.       -OR-
  415.  
  416.      I could not access my CD-ROM drive in MS-DOS real mode.
  417.  
  418. A4>  Your CD-ROM drive is not available in MS-DOS mode because a CD-ROM 
  419.      real-mode driver is not loaded.
  420.  
  421.      The Intel(r) BM-IDE driver is not compatible with real-mode CD-ROM
  422.      drivers, usually added to the CONFIG.SYS; the real-mode drivers must
  423.      be REM'd or removed from the CONFIG.SYS in order to use the Intel(r) 
  424.      BM-IDE driver.  To workaround this issue, you can create a custom 
  425.      startup configuration that loads CD-ROM real-mode driver. The game
  426.      will run in exclusive MS-DOS mode using its own MS-DOS configuration.
  427.  
  428.      To create a exclusive MS-DOS mode for MS-DOS CD-ROM games:
  429.      1.  Right-click the game's executable file in My Computer.
  430.      2.  Click on Properties.
  431.      3.  Click on Advanced...
  432.      4.  In the Advanced dialog box, click on MS-DOS mode
  433.      5.  Select "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" to edit
  434.          the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  435.      6.  Please refer to your CD-ROM manual for the proper 
  436.          command line settings of CD-ROM real-mode driver and
  437.          MSCDEX.EXE in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  438.      7.  Please refer to your game manual for the required system 
  439.          environment settings. 
  440.

  462. The release notes describe the current known state of the Intel(r) BM-IDE
  463. Driver for Windows* 95.  The release notes are divided into the

  471. * 9A.  LARGE IDE FIXED DISK DRIVE SUPPORT                                  *
  472. ****************************************************************************

  474. Intel recommends that the "auto" mode of disk recognition should be used in 
  475. most systems' BIOS setup option when installing new disk drives.  Some older 
  476. systems may not support the large disk drives because of BIOS limitations.  
  477. Users are encouraged to contact their system provider for the system or BIOS 
  478. upgrade before installing the Intel driver for large drive support.   
  479.  
  480. The Intel(r) BM-IDE driver for Windows* 95 supports the following fixed 
  481. disk geometry translation mechanisms. Do not install the Intel driver if the 
  482. system does not support them or the drive is not configured to use them.
  483.     - Standard Cylinder-Head-Sector (CHS) translation in BIOS
  484.     - Logical Block Addressing (LBA) mode
  485.     - BIOS Disk Services INT13h, Function 08h to report the drive geometry 
  486.       parameters 
  487.  
  488. The Intel(r) BM-IDE driver for Windows* 95 does not support certain disk
  489. geometry translation mechanisms.  The user should use the default Microsoft
  490. Windows* 95 IDE driver if the system uses the following translation
  491. mechanisms.
  492.     - All other BIOS translation schemes not supported by
  493.       the driver.
  494.     - Any software translation mechanisms, such as Ontrack 
  495.       Disk Manager*, EZ-Drive*, or master boot record 
  496.       hooking.
  497.

  537. * 9C.  KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE                                        *

  540. 1) Full-format of a legacy floppy diskette by LS-120 (SuperDisk) drive

  547.    If the floppy diskette must be reformatted, a solution is to format
  548.    the floppy diskette in a legacy floppy disk drive.  Another solution is
  549.    to de-install the Intel(r) BM-IDE driver, reboot, and use the native 
  550.    Microsoft IDE driver to format the floppy diskette in the LS-120 drive.

  552.    A different option is to use the 'quick-format' option to clear the 
  553.    floppy's FAT table of all file entries, which is usually the desired 
  554.    action.
